The Great Rambler

I dream of …

April 30, 2008 · 12 Comments

I was pretty harrowed by a particular course I took last quarter and PO’ed by my final grade in the course. However, a dream I had about the course has shattered me even more.

A friend who had also taken up the course (Yes Addy, it’s you) comes up to me and says very matter-of-factly, ‘Hey Amrita! Did you hear – ABC got an A+ in Game Theory. She was the only one who got one. Wow! She’s smart, isn’t she? She’s smart, isn’t she? She’s smart, isn’t she?

The Scream

(A picture is worth a thousand words)

I woke up mortified. No, not because ABC had got an A+ in Game Theory (that was a scary thought too, even though she wasn’t in the class) but because I was stung in the face by one tight slap in my sleep: by a dream straight out of a Lindsay Lohan teen drama, a dream that would not qualify as a case study even in Psychology 101. Damn, I expected my subconscious to have a little more class. I thought I was poetry, turns out I am burlesque.

I have a theory that dreams are a glimpse into another space, another time, a parallel universe where you made different choices, and are free to make more.

I think my parallel universe is a house of mirrors: it surrounds you with the obvious, exaggerates nuances and distorts straight lines.

Edit: For all those who asked, ABC was not in the Game Theory class at all, so don’t try and guess her identity.

I very rarely remember my dreams. I think that is a blessing. Right now when I close my eyes all I can see are quals questions, so I am glad I can’t remember actual quals dreams!

(It took me a while to figure out what PO’ed actually meant. I have never seen the expression written like that before, so am curious where it comes from.)

@987s: All’s well that ends well, right? No more nightmares for you, I guess.

You have probably seen POed or po’ed?

@Pat: Fine, you have made your point :) Surprisingly, I understood most of what you said, but I can’t reply in French, so here goes..
You believe in signs too? I attach importance to the most trivial things taking them to be signs. I usually analyze my dreams too – but only when they are complex, not the ones as silly as the one I have described.

I wonder what would happen if we also started taking actions, and make justifications etc based on our dreams..

I once dreamt that I asked out a girl and she said yes. Did the same thing awake the next day.But unfortunately the results didn’t match up :D

@Pat,Amrita: well, i dont understand french.. but frm the reply i can guess what the question was….

I believe in the today’s fortune that orkut shows everyday :) . Today it says “The star of riches is shining upon you”, so that means I’m not gonna forget to take my student ID for the student discount to the movie tonight. See how obviously it predicts the future. God bless orkut.

I think the whole big deal about dreams is the after effect of all those novels and movies and poetry we have been subjected to in the name of appreciation of art. Honestly, I have nothing against art. However, THIS definitely is thanks to all those melodramatic Hindi movies that you certainly have watched a lot of.

I don’t know if I shd be happy, that I appear in your dreams (nightmares) or shocked that you believe that knowing “someone got an A+ in Game Theory” would make me feel that person was smart. :P

btw, in case you haven’t read “Surely, You’re joking Mr Feynman”, do have a look at its chapter on dreams. He experimented with dreams as well :D

@Addy: I am sorry you didn’t get an author-backed role in my nightmare :P

Also, you surely don’t mean to suggest that people analyze dreams only because of Hindi movies, do you? Freud just turned over in his grave!
